Luis Felipe Arias’s questions and Harnel Peña’s answers
Why did the lecturer meant
when he said: “even from the noblest of causes, research can go out and find
things we don’t expect to find”?
Research allows a set of
activities aimed at finding the "why" of something, sometimes
exceeding the expectations of what you intend to seek, from this point of view
happens the "why" of the teacher's expression.
From your personal
experience, do you consider translation is being used in Colombia at school the
same way it was taught in United States back in the sixties?
I think that learning of
English in Colombia has been evolving in recent years, although there is still
much to be done, I do not think it is using the same methodology as in the
United States in the sixties, since all this can start from the approaches of
the teachers and the methodologies of the universities, which are in constant
change.
Why do you think the
lecturer said that translation is not good for fluency?
According to the video, it
does not help because it is a process based on transporting something from one
language to another ... but it does not strengthen the aspects that are based
on the linguistic structures (listening, speaking).
What are some other aspects
you consider in which translation doesn’t help pretty much?
In learning a second
language, in the development of active skills.
If translation strategies
are used appropriately, what will be some aspects translation helps to develop
in students?
It could help to
scrupulously respect the orthographic, orthotypographic, syntactic and
punctuation rules of the target language; It can also help to think about
making clear decisions and acting consistently.

What Alex wants to bust
with those books?
She wants to bust the
popular belief that people from her country don’t enjoy reading some kinds of
books related to other cultures from around the world, specifically children’s
books, or just for the fact they are different from what they know or they are
familiar with.
Why children would like the
books?
Because they find books
which are different the ones they are used to either reading or working with
interesting
The students who speak one
language in school and one in house, are interpreters or translators? why?
According to Sara Ardizzon,
children which speak one language in school and another one at home perform
both roles, but I think they do in a very intuitive manner so they tried to
find the different connections that are present in L1 and L2, they are at a
certain extend mediators. However, it is important to remember that translators
and interpreters are professionals, they are people who studied for many years
in order to get and develop strategies, techniques, methodologies, theories and
so on, to transmit messages which wouldn’t be possible to spread if they didn’t
exist.
Why the literature is
depriving children with its books in that country?
Alex strick said British
literature deprives children in that country when children have no opportunity
to explore, to find or to be exposed to something new, when they cannot see
what the similarities and the differences are between their culture and the
other ones.
Why is good to focus the
books to far more exotic choices of them?
It is good to give students
some other literature choices because if we do so, they will be able to broaden
their understanding, they will develop the capability to think differently, the
capability to understand that there is much more than what they have read or
seen or been taught.

Why do you think the
translation industry moves millions per year?
I think that translation
moves millions per year because according to the video, translation is a very
big industry, it's on track to reach 40 billion U.S. dollars in the coming
years, there are more than 30 thousand businesses out there offering
translation services and there are hundreds of thousands of translators all
over the world.
Why is translation art and
science?
Because both translation
and music are being shaped by technology. Technology shapes all of the
Arts, it is also shaping the way people perform those arts. Most music today is
recorded in digital form, as a result you can stream music from anywhere in the
world, information in other languages can also be delivered in streaming form.
Why do you think
translating goes beyond computer-generated translation?
Because currently we can
find good ang personalized translations. Moreover, in the language world is
something called translation memory it records translations so that you can use
them again in the future saving time effort and money.
Why is translation compared
to producing music?
if you have many languages
and lots of content the translation project becomes more like an orchestra, there
has to be a conductor to keep everyone in harmony and make sure that they get
the timing right, when people pay for a performance they expect it to be good
to be professional nothing out of tune, no flat sounding notes, this happens
with translation too.
What do you think about
online translation tools?
I think that free online
translations tools are a good alternative to translate words or simple
sentences, but if you want to translate paragraphs or big phrases these tools
are not a good option because there are a lot of mistakes in its
translations.
